Creating a Dial Up Network for Melb PC
The following is a step-by-step guide to configuring a Dial Up Network (DUN) in
Windows for the Melbourne PC Internet Service. The illustrations shown
are from Windows 98 through to Windows Vista - there may be some apparent differences in later versions,
however the configuration information remains unchanged.
An easier method is to use the Melb PC Internet
Configuration program which can be downloaded from
http://www.melbpc.org.au/help/MPC2008.EXE
| Step 1.
Click on My Computer and then the Dial-Up Networking icon.
Double click on Make New Connection
|

|
|
Step 2.
In the new window type in
Melb PC Internet (or a suitable
title - you can create separate
icons for individual phone numbers)
Select
your modem from the drop down selection.
Click
on Next
|
|
|
Step 3.
In the next window enter the
Telephone number:
Full Internet Subscribers:
9697 4000 (180 lines)
0198 333 365 (for outer Melbourne access)
Click Next to go to the next window.
|

|
| Step 4.
This next window confirms you
have successfully created the
new connection.
Click Finish to complete this
stage.
|

|
| Step 5.
Returning to the Dial-Up Networking
window,
highlight with a left mouse click, and then right-click on this new icon to Properties
to take you to the next
step.
|

|
Step 6
The new window opens with the General tab showing the phone number and modem details entered previously.
Remove the check from the Area Code box.
To move to the next step, click on the Server Types tab at the top of the page.
|

|
| Step 7
On this Server Types page,
remove ticks from all boxes except for Enable software compression and TCP/IP
After doing this, click on the TCP/IP
Settings button near the bottom right of the page to proceed to the next stage.
|

|
| Step 8
Ensure the radio button alongside Server assigned IP address is checked.
Insert a check alongside Server assigned name server addresses
Leave checks against the two boxes at
the bottom of the page as shown.
Click OK after completing this
stage to return
to the Server Types page.
|

|
| Step 9
The remaining two tabs Scripting
and Multilink do not require any configuration.
Click on OK to complete the
configuration.
|

|
| Step 10
After the previous step and clicking OK
you will be returned to the Dial-Up Networking window.
To complete the setup, highlight and
right-click on the new icon and then click on Create Shortcut.
A new window will open stating that it
"cannot create a shortcut here", and asks if you would like it placed on the Desktop instead.
Answer Yes to this prompt. |

|
The New shortcut will then
appear on the Desktop
similar to that shown. |
| Complete!
With the configuration of the Dial-Up
Network
complete, simply click on the new icon on your
Desktop and the Connect To window will
open.
Correct and complete any missing
information which will be remembered for future use, click on Connect and the dialling to connect you to the Internet will commence.
After the connection is complete you
should be able to use your configured browser, mail and news programs, etc. |
