Getting E-mail While Away

Melb PC subscribers are able to download their e-mail from their mailbox from almost any other Internet user's account located anywhere in the world.

Simply change the POP3 settings in the mailer in the other account to: popa.melbpc.org.au, change the Account name to your Melb PC username, and when prompted, use your Melb PC password. Your e-mail will then download to the other account.
Always remember to reset the POP address in the other account after use else the other person may wonder why they are not receiving any e-mail.
Note: You may not be able to send any e-mail addressed as: username@melbpc.org.au from another Internet providers domain.

National Number Access

A National Access Number is available for members taking their computers with them while travelling to regional areas or interstate, to enable them to connect to Melb PC for the cost of a local call anywhere in Australia. A page with the detail is at http://www.melbpc.org.au/report/nationalaccess.htm and a link is also on the MOTD. Note You need to register for use of this number.

Webmail from Melb PC

Melb PC does have web mail access from https://wss.melbpc.org.au/wm/mailman.cgi (or from links on the external web page and the MOTD) which provides access to read and send mail. However it does have some limitations in that it will only display the first 10 KB of a message, and will not decode attachments.

However for simple mail access it may prove adequate provided for use within these limitations. To access simply connect to the above address from any browser located anywhere, and access is gained simply by responding to the prompts for Username and Password. The above address is hard to remember and it is probably easier to connect through the link on the Melb PC external webpage http://www.melbpc.org.au/index.htm

Remember it is a poor replacement for a properly configured mail program with all features and is not recommended for everyday use.

Hotmail and other free e-mail services.

Another (and preferable) method is to open an account at www.hotmail.com or a similar free e-mail service which is accessed using a regular browser program and not a specific e-mail program. With a Hotmail e-mail you will have another e-mail address (eg. fredsmith@hotmail.com).

An additional attraction previously available with Hotmail was that you were able to access your Melb PC e-mail using their POP access. Unfortunately this service was discontinued in July 2002.

Although there are still a few services offering this service, it is expected that this type of service will disappear in the near future.

Other web based e-mail access

Although web based e-mail has limitations for filing e-mails and reading attachments, access to other (including  Melb PC, and even Hotmail or similar) POP addresses can be accessed through your normal browser through services such as ThatWeb at http://www.thatweb.com/.  This will enable you to simply obtain access after entering your e-mail address and password. However these sites are overseas, and consequently access can be slow to very slow. The service from ThatWeb is no longer free and a monthly charge is now made for this access.
