Configuring the MS Internet Explorer browser

The following is a step-by-step guide to configuring MS Internet Explorer for the Melb PC Internet Service. The illustrations used are from MSIE v6.0 and may vary slightly from other versions, however the configuration information is the same.

This configuration can be done automatically using the Melb PC Internet Configuration program.

Step 1

Start MS Internet Explorer (either offline or online).

Go to Tools and then Internet Options on the drop-down menu.

Step 2

On the General tab enter the Home Page address: http://www.melbpc.org.au/isp/

Just below in Temporary Internet Files click on Settings to open the next window.

Step 3. Settings

Set the radio button against Automatically for the optimum
performance.

The setting for Amount of disk space to use will probably have a setting already in place which was determined as a percentage of the available disk space during installation, and in some cases
may often be several 100 MB which is extremely wasteful.

A disk space setting of 25 MB is usually more than adequate for home usage.

Step 4. Connections tab

[The settings for the Security, Privacy and Content tabs may be left untouched, or altered to suit your own preferences.]

If you have already created a Dial-Up Network (DUN) the name will appear in the centre window. If you do not have one already created, you can click Add and proceed as described separately
for creating a DUN.

Although you can set the radio button below against Always dial my default connection this is not recommended as it will limit your flexibility if using more than one DUN setup on your computer.

Instead set the radio button against Never dial a connection, and always use the Melb PC dialler icon on your desktop for connecting.

Next click on Settings on the right hand side.

Step 5. Internet Settings

Proxy setting unnecessary

The setting of manual proxies is not necessary and can result in slower service. Leave check boxes unchecked.

Step 6. Manual Proxy Settings

Proxy setting unnecessary, leave check boxes unchecked

Click OK to return to the previous window.

Step 7. Advanced Dial-Up

Referring to the illustration for Step 5, click on Advanced on the right hand side for Dial-Up Settings.

In the Advanced Dial-Up window set the Try to connect value back to 1, and remove all other checks.
(This will help prevent unwanted redials or premature disconnects.)

Click OK twice to return to the page shown in Step 4.

Step 8. LAN Settings

Leave check boxes unchecked.

Click OK to continue, and ignore the Sharing button

Step 9. Programs tab

This page enables you to select from the various programs installed on your computer the one you wish to use as the default if directed to by Internet Explorer.

In the example shown Forté Agent is being selected from the Mailer programs installed. For most users there will be only one (or none) listed for some actions.

Click OK, and as the configuration is now complete you will return to the  opening window of Internet Explorer.
