Configuring Netscape as a Browser, for E-mail and News

The following is a step-by-step guide to configuring Netscape Communicator for the Melb PC Internet service, and as the settings for the Browser (Navigator), E-mail and News (Messenger), and Web Page design (Composer) can be configured at the one time, the following instructions will configure all these programs simultaneously.

If you have previously installed Netscape and now wish to configure it for another user or for connection to another ISP, first click on this link.
Step 1. Starting

Open Netscape, click on Edit on the toolbar,  and from the contextural menu click on  Preferences.

Step 2. Preferences

This window contains all menus for configuring the various programs for
Melb PC, as well as  your own preferred appearances.

Appearance followed  by Fonts and Colors
are for your own preferences and may be selected as required.

Changes to all settings may be made at any time now or in the future by entering the appropriate area and making any required change.

Step 3. Navigator

In the Location box for  Home Page enter the  Melb PC address:
http:// www.melbpc.org.au/isp/

Other settings on this
Navigator page, and the following three - Languages, Applications and Smart Browsing may be left to the default settings, or changed to  suit your preferences.

Step 4. Mail & Newsgroups.

In this section all E-mail and News   settings are configured.

You may wish to make changes  to the default settings  for font styles, sounds, etc.,  however these can be accepted as is and changed to suit later.

Step 5. Identity

This is one of the most important windows, and
it is essential to insert by typing:

Your name:

Your E-mail address:

Organization: This name must always be the name  of your provider
Melbourne PC User Group, Australia

The Reply-to address is left blank unless return mail is to be forwarded to another address.

Step 6. Mail Servers

These settings are critical for the successful use of E-mail.

Under Incoming Mail Server click on Add and enter:
popa.melbpc.org.au

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server enter:
smtp.melbpc.org.au

Outgoing mail server user name is your allocated Username as shown.

At the bottom of the  window is shown the  Local mail folder generated for this user where all  mail will be stored.

Step 7. Newsgroup Servers

Add the Melb PC News Server:  news.melbpc.org.au

Step 8. Formatting

The three windows above Messages, Windows Settings, Copies and Folders can be left at  the default settings, or changed to your preference now or at a later time.

Under Formatting the preference in the Internet community is for the use  of Plain Text as it uses  less space and is faster  to send and receive.

Step 9. Disk Space

The Return Receipts (above) can be left to the default setting similar to mentioned above.

Message sizes for E-mail and News can be changed to suit your own needs.

Step 10. Roaming Access

This window and the two sub-menus below may be  left untouched unless you have special needs.

Step 11. Composer

Composer and the sub-menu Publishing are  for use in web page design which may or not be required.

It is suggested that settings be left unchanged, although it is always possible to make changes in the future.

Step 12. Offline

Offline and sub-menu Download can also be left at the default settings, or changed to suit your preferences.

Step 13. Advanced.

The initial Advanced page can be left unchanged, although you may decide to change the settings regarding Cookies

Step 14. Cache

The settings in this  window allow you to  decide how much disk  space you should allow  for storing material  viewed while browsing.

The use of the Disk  Cache enables the re-use  of icons, images, and other material to be accessed  from the hard disk instead  of continually downloading  a fresh copy - thus  speeding up your browsing.

Step 15. Proxies

Melb PC does not require setting of Proxies.

Set the radio button  against Direct connection to the Internet

Step 16. SmartUpdate

SmartUpdate is a service provided by Netscape to enable updating of the programs as they are released.

We have now come to  the end of the  configuration process,  so click OK and return to
the opening Netscape page.
