Configuring
Netscape as a Browser, for E-mail and News
The following
is a step-by-step guide to configuring Netscape Communicator for the Melb
PC Internet service, and as the settings for the Browser (Navigator),
E-mail and News (Messenger), and Web Page design
(Composer) can be configured at the one time, the following instructions
will configure all these programs simultaneously.
If you have
previously installed Netscape and now wish to configure it for another
user or for connection to another ISP, first click on this
link.

1. Starting
Open Netscape,
click on Edit on the toolbar,
and from the
contextural menu click on
Preferences.

2. Preferences
This window
contains all menus for
configuring the various programs
for
Melb PC, as
well as your own preferred
appearances.
Appearance
followed by Fonts
and Colors
are for your
own preferences and may be selected as required.
Changes to
all settings may be made
at any time now or in
the future by entering the
appropriate area and making
any
required change.

3. Navigator
In the Location
box for Home Page
enter the Melb PC address:
http://
www.melbpc.org.au/isp/
Other settings
on this
Navigator
page, and the following three - Languages, Applications and
Smart Browsing may be left
to the default settings, or changed to
suit your
preferences.

4. Mail & Newsgroups.
In this section
all E-mail and News settings are configured.
You may wish
to make changes to the default settings for font styles, sounds,
etc., however these can be accepted as is and changed to suit later. |

5. Identity
This is one
of the most important windows, and
it is essential
to insert by typing:
Your name:
Your E-mail
address:
Organization:
This name must always be the name
of your provider
Melbourne
PC User Group, Australia
The Reply-to
address is left blank unless return mail is to be forwarded to another
address. |

6. Mail Servers
These settings
are critical for the successful use of E-mail.
Under Incoming
Mail Server click on Add and enter:
popa.melbpc.org.au
Outgoing
mail (SMTP) server enter:
smtp.melbpc.org.au
Outgoing
mail server user name is your allocated Username as shown.
At the bottom
of the window is
shown the Local mail
folder generated for this user where all
mail will
be stored. |

7. Newsgroup Servers
Add the Melb
PC News Server: news.melbpc.org.au |

8. Formatting
The three windows
above Messages, Windows Settings, Copies and Folders
can be left at the default
settings, or changed to your preference now or at a later time.
Under Formatting
the preference in the Internet community is for the use
of Plain
Text as it uses less space
and is faster to send and
receive. |

9. Disk Space
The Return
Receipts (above) can be left to the default setting similar to mentioned
above.
Message sizes
for E-mail and News can be changed to suit your own needs. |

10. Roaming Access
This window
and the two sub-menus below may be
left untouched
unless you have special needs. |

11. Composer
Composer
and the sub-menu Publishing are
for use in
web page design which may or not be required.
It is suggested
that settings be left unchanged, although it is always possible to make
changes in the future. |

12. Offline
Offline
and sub-menu Download can also be left at the default settings,
or changed to suit your preferences. |

13. Advanced.
The initial
Advanced page can be left unchanged, although you may decide to
change the settings regarding Cookies. |

14. Cache
The settings
in this window allow
you to decide how
much disk space you
should allow for storing
material viewed while
browsing.
The use of
the Disk Cache
enables the re-use of icons,
images, and other material to be accessed
from the hard
disk instead of continually
downloading a fresh copy
- thus speeding up
your browsing. |

15. Proxies
Melb PC does
not require setting of Proxies.

button against Direct
connection to the Internet |

16. SmartUpdate
SmartUpdate
is a service provided by Netscape to enable updating of the programs as
they are released.
We have
now come to the end
of the configuration
process, so click
OK and
return to
the opening
Netscape page.
