Unable to access ANY external sites?

If you are not able to access any external web pages yet access to mail and the MOTD is normal, there are only three probable reasons for this difficulty.

1.   Internet access number
Users of Melb PC Internet service cannot access external sites if connected to the Intranet number 8626 5001; access is available only through the Internet dial-up numbers.

Please note you must be a full Internet member to utilise the Internet dial-up numbers and have full Internet access. Associate members can only use 8626 5001 which provides limited Internet access.

2.  Proxy Server Settings

Go to My Computer
then
Control Panel

then
Internet Options

and then the Connections tab

For each of the Melb PC dialers listed
on that screen, highlight each in turn
and click on Settings to advance to
the page as pictured on the right.

Check Automatically detect settings.

This is the preferred option, however automatic script and manual proxy settings may be selected if required. On rare occasions trying these settings may allow access to particular websites or pages.

To set the automatic proxy script: check
Use automatic configuration script
and enter the Address as:
http://hww.melbpc.org.au/local/proxy.pac

To set Manual Proxies:
check Use a proxy server and
then set all addresses to:
proxy.melbpc.org.au and Port: 8080

Repeat this for each of the dialers listed
and in addition for the LAN Settings on
the previous window.

3.  DNS numbers

The third check should be preceded by a check to ensure that you are actually connected and that the dialled connection has not been lost. This can be checked simply by Pinging the server:
Go to Start  |  Run  and then type ping www.melbpc.org.au

If this test proves the connection is OK, then the final test should be to check your  dialersettings.

In your Dial-up Network Configuration for each dialer you have configured for Melb PC, right-click the icon for the dialer and click on Properties.

Under Server Types

click on TCP/IP Settings button.

Set the radio buttons against
Server assigned IP Address
and
Specify name server addresses

The Primary and Secondary DNS should be
set to two of the three available addresses:
203.12.152.1, 203.12.152.2 and 203.12.152.3

Finally ensure that a check appears against
Use IP header compression
and
Use default gateway on remote network.

Connection to some sites may not be possible due to a number of other reasons including an incorrectly typed, outdated, or currently unavailable address.
And, of course, if nothing at all works it probably means that the connection has been lost.
