Checking E-mail configuration in Outlook Express

The following illustrations are intended as a step-by-step guide to checking your own e-mail settings in MS Outlook Express for the Melb PC Internet Service
Step 1.

Open Outlook Express or Outlook, and select Tools and select Accounts from the dropdown menu.

Step 2.

Select the Mail tab and highlight the mail account to be checked.

Click on Properties to open the pages listing the mail settings applicable for Melb PC.

Step 3.

The settings shown on this picture and the four following below are as required for Melb PC Internet Service.

Only the Name of the subscriber, E-mail address, and Username should differ.

(Note: If you are connected to another ISP you must use the name of their "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)" server and not that of Melb PC.)

The most common error is confusion in the correct use of E-mail address and Account name (ie Username)

Step 4.

Before finishing there is the opportunity to change selections to meet your individual preferences.

Return to Tools and from the dropdown menu select Options.

Step 5.

Go to the General tab and check the boxes as shown.

Checking the mail every 15 minutes ensures the server timeout of 20 minutes is never exceeded while the mail program is kept open.

Step 6.

Go to the Send tab and check the boxes as shown.

HTML mail should only be sent when needed and only to recipients who can read this format.

Step 7.

Go to the Security tab and check the boxes as shown.

The Restricted sites zone will not affect attachments but will limit embedding of objects.

Step 8.

Go to the Connection tab and ensure the lower box under Dial-up is left unchecked.

This will eliminate many problems that can be associated with Diallers.

Click Ok to close the Options Box

Step 9.

Select Tools and select Accounts from
the dropdown menu and check the boxes as shown

The preview pane should never be used as it makes your computer more vulnerable to messages carrying a virus.
