Configuring Outlook Express for E-mail

The following is a step-by-step guide to configuring MS Outlook Express for the Melb PC Internet Service for sending and receiving e-mail. The illustrations used are from Outlook Express v5.5 and may vary slightly from later versions however the configuration information is the same.

Other Microsoft Mail programs are similar in most regards, and the Outlook Express information should be adequate for complete configuration.

 
Step 1.

Open Outlook Express or Outlook, and select Tools and select Accounts from the dropdown menu.

 

Step 2.   Click on Add and select Mail from the new window
           

Step 3.

In the next window enter your Real Name of the user in the box provided.

Click Next to go to the next window.

 

Step 4.

In the next window enter the full e-mail address in the box provided.

Click Next to go to the next window.

Step 5.

Select the POP3 from the dropdown menu in My incoming mail server.

In the Incoming mail server box enter:
popa.melbpc.org.au

In the Outgoing mail server box enter:
smtp.melbpc.org.au

(Note: If you are connected to another ISP you must use the name of their "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)" server and not that of Melb PC.)

Click Next to go to the next window.

Step 6.

In the Account name box enter your allocated Username
Note: Do not enter your full e-mail address
with the domain
name
.

In the Password box enter your Password.
Note: Whatever password is entered
, it will always appear as a row of asterisks.

Click on the Remember password box to save having to enter your password each time you check for mail.

Click on Next to go to the next window.

Step 7.

This stage of the configuration is complete so click on Finish

You will then be returned to the Internet Accounts window shown below.

Step 8.

The new mail configuration is shown under the Mail tab.

Click on Properties to complete the configuration.

Step 9.

Under the General tab most of the configuration entered earlier will already appear in this window.

In the box alongside Organisation enter:
Melbourne PC User Group, Australia
Note: This Organization address is the only acceptable one for Melb PC subscribers.

The Reply address should be left blank unless you wish replies to be directed to an alternative e-mail address.

Step 10. The remaining tab windows should not require any modification, and are shown below to provide a check of the configuration details.

Step 11.

Before finishing, selections to your individual preferences may be made.

Return to Tools and from the dropdown menu select Options.

 

Step 12.

Go to the General tab and check the boxes as shown.

Checking the mail every 15 minutes ensures the server timout of 20 minutes is never exceeded while the mail program is kept open.

 

Step 13.

Go to the Send tab and check the boxes as shown.

HTML mail should only be sent when needed and only to recipients who can read this format.

 

Step 14.

Go to the Security tab and check the boxes as shown.

The Restricted sites zone will not affect attachments but will limit embedding of objects.

 

Step 15.

Go to the Connection tab and ensure the lower box under Dial-up is left unchecked.

This will eliminate many problems that can be associated with Diallers.

Click Ok to close the Options Box

 

Step 16.

Select View and select Layout from 
the dropdown menu and check the boxes as shown

The preview pane should never be used as it makes your computer more vulnerable to messages carrying a virus.
