Unwanted Spam MailThis is one of things we can all do without -
unwanted, often of an unpleasant nature - these email messages are
something we all get from time to time, and it is something we all can do
without!
What has happened is that your name has been
"harvested" probably from a quite innocent site you have visited,
somewhere, sometime, and then sold on by dealers who sell these addresses
to the companies who mail out this kind of material. I'm afraid it is one
of the consequences of cheap mail - it's even cheaper that the unwanted
junk mail you get in your letterbox. In fact the answer is to treat it
exactly as you would the junk mail you receive in your letterbox and Trash
it.
Recent laws passed in some US States make it illegal to send e-mail
without disclosing the sender's name, and must provide you with the
opportunity to "unsubscribe" from receive further mail from that source.
Many have tried to do this, but it seldom works!
It is possible for an ISP to prevent mail originating at a particular
source, however if it is sent through a large provider, this could result
in all innocent mail being treated similarly. You can take some steps
using filters which are provided with most mailer programs - for instance
you could filter out and stop any mail coming to you containing the word
"sex". However this could mean that you would not receive a message from a
relative using an expression while advising the birth of a new child by
adding "whose sex is male". Filters work very effectively, but it is
necessary to be very careful with your choice of the critical words.
Perhaps the easiest choice is to "trash" them immediately on receiving
them, and in particular never open any attachments or follow the links
provided.
Subscribers who have used the services of some ISPs such as AOL will
have found how annoying unwanted spam email can be.
