Below is a description of the program as written by it's author:-

"Difference between LCD and CRT text output - CRT monitors' pixels are formed by several dots of different colour. On small resolutions a single CRT display pixel can consist of more than 9 coloured points. If the screen resolution is huge, the CRT tube pixel contains only 3 coloured dots. Moreover, pixels standing side by side can share the same dots! So, on CRT screens low-contrast transitions are blurred, but high-contrast junctions obtain geometric distortions.

LCD displays have square pixels of fixed size. Each pixel consists of 3 rectangular (usually vertical) nonintersecting coloured areas. So, diagonal lines and text characters, which are automatically smoothed on CRT monitors, become jagged on LCD screens.

Anti-aliasing algorithms help to solve these problems when rendering raster images. If "Smooth edges of screen fonts" feature is enabled, Windows analysers a picture around the particular text and adjusts colour. of surrounding pixels to get a better visual result.

ClearType technology was developed to improve visual result of text rendering especially for LCD panels.

ClearType and anti-aliasing in Microsoft Windows
ClearType technology first appeared in Windows XP. This technology renders the text in a way which makes it look much better on LCD screens with rectangle pixels instead of circle CRT dots.

There are RGB and BGR types of screens, this depends on the colour. order inside the pixel. ClearType algorithms are absolutely different for each type of displays. Text rendered for RGB monitor looks absolutely ugly on BGR display and vice versa, that's why many people hate ClearType. There are also different Clear Type algorithms for portrait orientation of the screen.

As you can see, the ClearType settings should be individually tuned for every LCD display. And remember that ClearType is useless for CRT monitors.

Where is this option?
Options for text anti aliasing ("Smooth edges of screen fonts") and ClearType are located in different places depending on Windows version. This is very annoying and confuses users much!

In Windows XP all these options are accessible via "Display properties" -> "Appearance" -> "Effects". Quite logical, isn't it?

In Windows Vista, if you have Aero enabled, you'll have to click on "Open classic appearance properties for more colour. options" in "Window Colour. and Appearance" Control Panel applet. A little bit strange...

Windows 7 went even further! You cannot turn off ClearType without completing a useless wizard I've wasted about 15 minutes looking for the "smooth font edges" option but wasn't able to find it at all! Only googling helped to solve this quest. The option was separated from ClearType settings and moved to "Control Panel" -> "All Control Panel Items" -> "Performance Information and Tools" -> "Adjust Visual Effects", in a huge list of checkboxes there is a "Smooth edges of screen fonts" item... AAAAAAAA! Insane!!!

Directory Hog is a small, free utility for Windows which will scan a drive of your choice and list the total size of each folder in a list. "TreePad Lite is a free personal information management tool. Its feature set, though sparse, nonetheless provides all the basics. Ideal for tight resource environments, it's a useful PIM for netbooks, older laptops, or carting around with you on a USB Flash memory stick.

The design and interface of Treepad Lite is fairly familiar: On the right is an expandable/collapsible tree which lists all of your topics, subtopics, and sub-sub-topics. On the left is, well, your topic--the actual text associated with the subject. Topics can be easily added, deleted, and moved, and it's simple to rearrange subtrees as well, promoting, demoting, or shifting them as needed.

There aren't a lot of options in TreePad Lite. You can choose one font for the tree and one for the text, with no word or paragraph level styling--not even bold or italic. You can sort a subtree (but not its children), or the entire tree, but not "this subtree and all of its children, but nothing else." You can search for text in the current article, or in the whole tree. ccextractor - Ver: 0.59

ccextractor is a fast, easy to use closed captions extractor for MPEG files and not only. Supports HDTV transport streams, DVD and Replay TV.

In short ccextractor is a small program that processes MPEG 2 files and extracts closed captions data to generate subtitle files.

You can use this program to create .srt (subtitles) files for your TV captures, have transcripts so you can edit subtitles, etc.

You can pass as many input files as you need. They will be processed in order.
Output will be one single file (either raw or srt). Use this if you made your
recording in several cuts (to skip commercials for example) but you want one
subtitle file with contiguous timing.

What's the point of generating separate files for subtitles, if they are already in the source file?

There are several reasons to have subtitles separated from the video file, including:

· Closed captions never survive MPEG processing. If you take a MPEG file and encode it to any format (such as divx), your result file will not have closed captions. This means that if you want to keep the subtitles, you need to keep the original file. This is hardly practical if you are archiving HDTV shows for example.

· Subtitles files are small - so small (around 250 Kb for a movie) that you can quickly download them, or email them, etc, in case you have a recording without subtitles.

· Subtitles files are indexable: You can have a database with all your subtitles if you want (there are many available), so you can search the dialogs.

· Subtitles files are a de-facto standard: Almost every player can use them. In fact, many setbox players accept subtitles files in .srt format - so you can have subtitles in your divx movies and not just in your original DVDs.

· Closed captions are stored in many different formats by capture cards. Upgrading to a new card, if it comes with a new player, may mean that you can't use your previously recorded closed captions, even if the audio/video are fine.

· Closed captions require a closed caption decoder. All US TV have one (it's a legal requirement), but no European TV does, since there are not closed captions in Europe (teletext is used instead). Basically this means that if you buy a DVD in the US which has closed captions but no DVD subtitles, you are out of luck. This is a problem with many (most) old TV shows DVDs, which only come with closed captions. DVD producers don't bother doing DVD subs, since it's another way to segment the market, same as with DVD regions.

What kind of files can I extract closed captions from?

CCExtractor currently handles:-

• DVDs.
  
• Most HDTV captures (where you save the Transport Stream).
  
• Captures where captions are recorded in bttv format. The number of cards that use this card is huge. My test samples came from a Hauppage PVR-250. You can check the complete list here.
  
• DVR-MS (microsoft digital video recording).
  

Usually, if you record a TV show with your capture card and CCExtractor produces the expected result, it will work for your all recordings. If it doesn't, which means that your card uses a format CCExtractor can't handle, please contact me and we'll try to make it work.
