Each DNS name server in the benchmark list is carefully “characterised” to determine its suitability for use as a DNS resolver. This characterisation includes testing each nameserver for its “redirection” behaviour: whether it returns an error for a bad domain request, or redirects a user's web browser to a commercial marketing-oriented page. While such behaviour may be acceptable to some users, others may find this objectionable.

The program's interface looks and feels remarkably like Acrobat Reader, but with more command icons along the top. Users who are familiar with viewing PDF's will find this fairly intuitive, but newcomers are advised to experiment with the options and pay attention to the Help file. Viewing PDF's is incredibly simple and should not be a problem for users. The documents look good through the reader and are easily navigated. While the program is good for simply looking at PDF's, it excels with its added features. The control panel along the top displays a long list of options for editing your PDF's. Cracking a password that uses any English word requires a maximum of 50,000 tries. Discryptor can help by generating random passwords, using a combination of numbers and non alpha-numeric characters. Tired of typing the same words, signatures, phrases, and even paragraphs over and over? What you need is a program that automatically inserts text when you type an abbreviation or hit a hotkey.

PhraseExpress is one such program, and it's my favourite for several reasons. For starters, it expands typed abbreviations into complete phrases. You could type, say, "fwiw," and PhraseExpress would instantly insert "for what it's worth." Or "sig" to insert a custom signature (complete with images and/or HTML code) at the end of e-mails.

This capability works in any program (word processor, e-mail client, blog tool, etc.), and PhraseExpress can even scan your documents and e-mails to find frequently used text to add to its auto-complete list. (It can import existing AutoCorrect entries from Word, too.) Of course, you can define your own entries as well.

The program also includes a global spell-check feature and a clipboard history tool, which stores all recent clipboard entries, not just the most recent one.

Needless to say, it's a killer app, one you'll quickly come to find indispensable.

System Explorer - Ver: 1.5

This full-featured system analysing tool lets you take a sneak peek at everything that is going on in your system, from currently active processes to installed drivers, including also network collections, startup applications and Internet Explorer add-ons, if you have any.

You can end any active process or delete items from the startup menu, to name a couple of examples. System Explorer has the possibility to obtain more information about each process from Google, or check it for virus with an online anti-virus tool.

The program includes loads of other interesting features. Version 1.5 includes support for external and internal plugins, filtering support to lists, and new plugin adds security enhancements.

TMonitor - Ver: 1.02

TMonitor is aimed to display the active clock of each individual core of Intel Core 2 and Core i3/i5/i7, as well as AMD K10 processors.

A very high refresh rate (20 times per second) allows to visualise the smallest clock variation in real time. TMonitor is able to detect mechanism such as Intel Turbo boost, and therefore allows to clearly visualize its effect as the processor is working.

You can run as many instances of TMonitor as there are physical CPUs in your system. The first instance will be attached to CPU #0, the next one to CPU#1, and so on.

If your processor supports the Intel Turbo Boost Technology, the boosted frequency will appear as a yellow bar extension, and the current value will also be display in yellow for the time that Turbo is enabled on the core.

Please note that starting with a certain size for the graphs, you will be notice as many yellow bricks as the number of "bins", namely the number of steps that the core multiplier is increased by the Turbo.

Tools and Options :-

  • Right-click anywhere in the TMonitor main window to make the floating menu appear.

"VistaSwitcher is an enhancement/replacement for the hoary, ancient, alt-tab program switcher attached to Vista like the vestigial leg bones buried deep inside a blue whale. It's free and nifty.

As well as providing a much more aesthetically pleasing task switching window, VistaSwitcher provides a lot more functionality - especially if you have many instances of the same application, such as multiple Word or Excel documents. VistaSwitcher shows you a larger preview window, making it easier to pick the document you like.

VistaSwitcher adds a new feature, alt-` (that's the backtick, located just above the tab on most keyboards), which shows you just the windows associated with the current application. This allows you to quickly switch from one Excel sheet to another without being distracted by Word documents or browser windows.

VistaSwitcher also allows for keyboardless application switching. You can set it to use the right mouse button and mouse wheel to switch - hold down the right mouse button and scroll through the app list with the wheel. For further customisability, you can make the task window 'sticky' - it won't go away when you release the summoning keys, but will wait for you to hit enter or otherwise confirm your selection. This can prevent accidental switches, and makes it easier to find a window in a long list, as you don't need to keep holding down keys while you scroll. (You can also set the number of items which show in the list, as well as the default position of the window.)

This program is still formally in beta test, and some features, such as font selection and theme, are not yet implemented. Although these would be nice from the "Oooh! Shiny!" perspective, their absence doesn't hinder VistaSwitcher's functionality, which is notably more than Vista's default task management.

This utility displays the list of all applications that are loaded automatically when Windows starts up.

It allows you to easily disable or delete unwanted programs that runs in your Windows startup. You can use it on your currently running instance of Windows, as well as you can use it on external instance of Windows in another drive.
