Hide - Ver: 3.4

"Hide is an ingenious program that allows users to hide various windows with the press of a button. Unfortunately, the program's unintuitive interface makes some of its features difficult to use, which is a major drawback.

The program's interface is basic, with a box labeled Currently Hidden Windows and another labeled Program Group. It's not immediately clear what a user should do from here, and there's no Help file, but a bit of clicking around reveals that the meat of the program's functions is contained in the Settings.

Here, users can set hot keys for a variety of functions, including hiding active windows, showing all windows, and changing the active window's title (a sneaky and useful feature). Unfortunately, the functions involving the Program Group aren't entirely clear. There are multiple references to Program Groups, but we're not sure if this means that Hide hides all instances of a particular program - all Word documents, for example - or if you can specify that you want to hide, for instance, Firefox and Solitaire. This part of the program is where a Help file would really come in handy.

We fiddled and fiddled with the Program Group options and just couldn't get anything to happen. The other options that allowed us to hide windows one at a time were still useful, but we were disappointed that we couldn't take advantage of all the program's features.

Hide is free. It comes as a ZIP file and is accessible after extraction with no need to install. Despite a few difficult features, we recommend this program to all users."

Windows Layout Manager (WiLMa) allows you to position and scale many windows on your desktop with ease. The main application has a basic window that allows the management of various layouts.

Adding new ones, editing existing ones, configuring the options, all the basic things you can expect from any normal application. When closed or minimised it sits in the tray and offers a tray icon with quick access to layouts that are enabled (it's possible to exclude layouts from populating the tray menu since some layouts are not meant to be applied directly).

A layout is a collection of window definitions that contain conditions and actions. Conditions that describe the window and how it should be detected and matched and actions that allow various actions to be taken such as minimising, moving, relocating, moving it to a different screen, offsetting the position, maximizing it to a certain screen, etc.

SmillaEnlarger - Ver: 0.85

If you've ever tried to work with small images, like the kinds generated by cameraphones, you know how frustrating it can be to turn them into something printable (or in some cases, easily viewable).

Most image editors make an attempt to smooth and sharpen, and some add a bit of "noise"
(random data, which, counterintuitively, can make an enlarged picture look a bit sharper) to enlarged images,. But not many of them do as good a job as SmillaEnlarger can do at taking tiny bitmap files and turning them into usable, full-size images.

To test the app, some screenshots of standard-sized application and file icons in Windows were taken. A typical icon image is 32 by 32 pixels when displayed at desktop resolutions of 72 dpi--pretty small and, when you enlarge them, they look pretty chunky, like billboards made of Lego bricks.

SmillaEnlarger's algorithm does a remarkable job of turning even an incredibly minute bitmap into something close to a blurry snapshot. While this is the full extent of its abilities, you might want to keep SmillaEnlarger in your digital imagery toolkit for a photographic rainy day.

"With its straightforward interface and whimsical attitude, IncrediMail appeals to the casual e-mailer, but actually offers enough features - like Exchange server support - to be functional for more serious endeavours.

You can personalise your messages with background stationery from a variety of categories, including animals, art, technology, and moods. The program installs with about 50 backgrounds, most with a cartoony feel, and you can download more online or create your own with Letter Creator (a 10-use trial comes with this download). It supports recorded voice attachments, and the premium version supports skins.

There are a few drawbacks. The overall interface lacks pizazz and looks like it was last overhauled back when emoticons were new. There's a questionnaire that must be filled out when installing the program, annoying even at three questions long. More significantly, IncrediMail turns into quite the resource pig when playing around with graphics-heavy backgrounds.

The features are solid, though. The program offers basic e-mail client functions, including sending, receiving, and organising messages; managing your address book; and creating rules for how to handle certain messages. Among its other included features are an integrated JunkFilter that lets you assign permission for senders or domains, IMAP support via a POP3 emulator, and Message Rules functions that work in concert with JunkFilter. IncrediMail makes standard e-mail a bit more fun for home users, especially for kids and kids at heart."

AlternateStreamView is a small utility that allows you to scan your NTFS drive, and find all hidden alternate streams stored in the file system. About Alternate Streams in NTFS File System
NTFS system has a feature that allows to add multiple streams in addition to the main file stream. When you open or view the file, only the main file stream is visible, while other additional streams are hidden from the user.
Here's 3 examples of alternate streams usage in Windows operating system:

Favourites of Internet Explorer: When You add a Web site link into your 'Favourites', a .url file containing the url and description is created. However, if the Web site also have an icon (favicon), the icon is saved as alternate stream for the same url file. The stream name of the icon is :favicon:$DATA
Downloaded files of Internet Explorer: When you download and save a file with Internet Explorer, it automatically add a zone information for the saved file. This zone information is used for identifying the file as downloaded file from the Internet. The stream name in this case is :Zone.Identifier:$DATA
Summary information of files: When you right-click on a file in Explorer and go to the 'Summary' tab, you can add summary information for the file, like title, subject, author, and so on. This summary information is also saved into alternate stream. The stream name in this case is SummaryInformation:$DATA.
In addition to the legitimate usage of alternate streams, this technique may also be used by Viruses/Trojans/Spywares for saving data and hiding it from the user.

Using AlternateStreamView
AlternateStreamView doesn't require any installation process or additional DLL files. In order to start using it, simply run the executable file - AlternateStreamView.exe
After running it, choose the drive or folder that you wish to scan, and click Ok. AlternateStreamView will scan the selected folder, and then it'll display all alternate streams found in the selected drive/folder. After the scan is finished, you can select one or more alternate streams, and then delete them ('Delete Selected Streams' option), or copy them into a folder that you choose ('Export Selected Streams To...').

DeleteOnClick - Ver: 2.2.0.14

When you delete a file or folder using Windows, it is usual for the file or folder to be moved to the Recycle Bin (Trash).

When the Recycle Bin is emptied, the data you have deleted is not actually removed from your computer. Instead, Windows makes the space occupied by the file available for writing. In other words, every file you delete using Windows is potentially recoverable in the short term. If you create a new file after deleting using Windows, or save a changed file, it may write over the 'deleted' file's space, thus destroying it permanently. Likewise, defragmenting will possibly overwrite the deleted files.

DeleteOnClick completely deletes files in one click rather than sending the file to the recycle bin. The data becomes unrecoverable.
