Synchredible offers an alternative to spending countless minutes copying, clicking, and dragging files into new locations, and it has a great deal of success.

This free download look a little intimidating at first with its very sparse display, but it's easily mastered. Select two files or folders from the file tree drop-down and you are on your way. Synchredible keeps you on pace by telling you where you are in the seven-step process at every screen. After selecting the information, and choosing in which direction it will flow, you can organise a filter, set a scheduler, and more. These steps are intuitive and make sense right away. The most important step is the final one, however, because it gives users the opportunity to sync only unique files, which prevents duplicates from being created.

From there, the files trade information. Users are given a readout of how many files transferred, any warnings, and how long the process took.

Overall, Synchredible is a fantastic product that works smoothly. The only rough patch came when we attempted to browse the Help menu and nothing happened. Snarl is a global notification system. Snarl works in a similar way to the balloon-style tooltips that appear from time to time in the system tray, however it doesn't take the keyboard focus away when displaying a notification.

OSFMount - Ver: 1.5.1007

OSFMount allows you to mount local disk image files (bit-for-bit copies of a disk partition) in Windows with a drive letter. You can then analyse the disk image file with PassMark OSForensics™ by using the mounted volume's drive letter. By default, the image files are mounted as read only so that the original image files are not altered.

OSFMount also supports the creation of RAM disks, basically a disk mounted into RAM. This generally has a large speed benefit over using a hard disk. As such this is useful with applications requiring high speed disk access, such a database applications, games (such as game cache files) and browsers (cache files). A second benefit is security, as the disk contents are not stored on a physical hard disk (but rather in RAM) and on system shutdown the disk contents are not persistent.

OSFMount supports mounting images of CD's, which can be useful when a particular CD is used often and the speed of access is important.

"Shooting Blocks is a free logic game from Adore Games. Its play and objective are deceptively simple, and the game becomes more challenging as players progress through the levels. In addition to helping polish your logical and spatial skills, it tunes the reflexes.

Shooting Blocks has the colourful look and smooth action of an up-to-date game, with a fantasy-based background image that we could replace with free images downloaded from the Adore Games site. Playing the game is as easy as clicking your mouse: Imagine stacked ice blocks, some of which are empty and others filled. You must click on the empty blocks to smash them without breaking the filled blocks. Breaking empty blocks scores points and breaking filled blocks subtracts points; there are bonus blocks, too. Players have a limited number of lives to play, and the game keeps score between each round. The only options are full screen, music, and sound controls.

Shooting Blocks is a lot of fun to play, and close to addictive. The ice-block structures get taller and more elaborate as the game progresses, and it gets harder to break the empty blocks in a way that drops the filled ones without sending them tumbling off the edge. We quickly moved through a game, starting over again to do a better job at bringing the filled blocks down intact. Of course, it's fun to topple the whole thing with as few points as possible, too. In any event, Shooting Blocks proved entertaining as well as educational; or maybe beneficial is the right word, since it helps train the brain, like many of Adore's other free games."

"EditPad Lite from Just Great Software is a freeware text editor that replaces Notepad in Windows. It adds up-to-date features like tabs, no arbitrary limits on file size, file conversion, unlimited undo and redo, and compatibility with Mac and Unix files.

EditPad Lite's installer let us choose between standard, portable, and advanced installation options. We selected the advanced option, which let us choose directories and set EditPad Lite as the default text file application, which would open EditPad Lite instead of Notepad when we clicked a text file or opened a new text file from Explorer's right-click menu. We could change it back by selecting Configure File Types on the Options menu; uninstalling the program restores Notepad as the default.

EditPad Lite's menu bar adds selections labeled Search, Block, and Convert to the usual complement of items. The Block menu is especially useful; it let us not only indent and outdent blocks of text but also insert files, append text, and Write (save) or Print the selection. The Convert tool handles uppercase, lowercase, invert case, initial caps, and text encoding, and it converts files between ANSI, ASCII, and Unicode as well as Unix and Mac formats in some instances. We could even apply simple ROT-13 encoding and decoding to texts as well.

"Practice isn't just the way to get to Carnegie Hall; it's also the way to become a good typist. KeyBlaze Free Typing Tutor from NCH Software can help you learn touch-typing or practice your skills. It offers basic lessons, drills, and speed tests suitable for typists ranging from absolute beginners to keyboard jockeys. It's easy to use and effective, too.

The KeyBlaze installation wizard offers three optional downloads, which we didn't try but thought sounded useful: FastFox, a typing expander for Firefox; TextTally, a word counter; and Express Scribe, which assists voice transcription.

We entered a User Name and a words-per-minute target and selected the optional initial skill test in the setup. The main view resembles a typewriter, with a standard keyboard image below a blank entry field. We had selected the initial test, which involved typing in a series of tongue-twisters at normal typing speed. KeyBlaze sounded an alarm whenever we hit the wrong key, and it illuminated our mistakes in red. Clicking the Exercises tab called up the main categories: Basics, Keyboard, Keypad, Practice, and Speed Tests.

" WinSCP is a small, free, open-source file transfer client for Windows that uses Secure Shell (SSH) technology to enable the safe copying of files between a local and a remote PC using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), SSH FTP, or SCP (Secure Copy) protocols, as well as offering some basic file management features.

This small tool's full-featured installer includes additional, optional software called Jing, but you have to select it; the default installation omits Jing. The installer also presents a choice between two different main interface styles, a full-featured Commander interface with panels for local and remote directories and a scaled-down Explorer interface that only accesses remote directories. The Commander interface is a small dialog with a navigation pane and places to enter host and user names, a password, and a private key file. An About button links to an extensive Web-based Help site. You can select between SFTP, SCP, and FTP transfers and several languages, but not much more, though, in this case, less is more since the program's goal is simplicity. One feature we did like a lot is the ability to Export the program's complicated preference settings with a click. InstalledCodec offers a basic functionality: It lists all the codec drivers and Direct Show filters currently installed on your system. The interface isn't flashy or ostentatiously designed, but simply a functional pane that lists items according to a variety of categories. These categories include the driver or filter's name, type, whether it's disabled, its install date and time, a file description and version number, and other useful information. All, perhaps, slightly tedious, but very important when you're trying to get a particular podcast to play and it just won't cooperate.

This little tool performed very well in our tests. We liked its simplicity. Disabling or activating or deleting a file from the list was a snap. It doesn't offer any real bells and whistles, but it does its job well. (If only we could find a utility that will tell us just which specific codec we're missing!) The 2Go version works on a USB drive, allow you to take Roboform and its saved info with you as you go.

All three of Roboform's options include a free version, which is limited to managing 10 logins. For some users, especially casual Web surfers, this version may be more than enough. "BootMed is not a program. It's an Ubuntu-based boot disc tailored (or "remixed," in BootMed jargon) with the idea of recovering failed or malware-infected Windows PC installations. More than that, it's also aimed at helping less tech-savvy users through the process. The first thing BootMed does after booting is open Firefox and browse to the BootMed site to display help and advice on recovery operations.

I'm sure the idea of using Linux to help teach Windows users how to recover their files has invoked a few chuckles amongst the Linux community as well as grimaces from Microsoft, though it's nothing radically new: I use Slax and Parted Magic all the time to recover data from Windows PCs. BootMed is not dead-simple--you must at least understand the concepts involved and be fairly proficient at navigating a file system--but it's a boon for less experienced users that want to learn the basic processes of recovery and of course, recover things.

I'm definitely adding BootMed to my bag of tools for no other reason than that it presents a small but very useful array of tools on an uncluttered desktop. Said tools include the GParted partition manager as well as WINE, which allows you to run Windows programs such as the included McAfee Stinger and ClamWin to remove viruses and other malware. WinUpdatesList - Ver: 1.31

True to its name, this freeware instantly displays Windows updates applied to your system. WinUpdatesList has a standard interface divided into two sections: one for the list of updates and the other for the list of files and drivers associated with them. No help file is available, but the program is pretty self-explanatory.

wPrime - Ver: 2.05

"wPrime is a leading multithreaded benchmark for x86 processors that tests your processor performance by calculating square roots with a recursive call of Newton's method for estimating functions, with f(x)=x2-k, where k is the number we're sqrting, until Sgn(f(x)/f'(x)) does not equal that of the previous iteration, starting with an estimation of k/2.

It then uses an iterative calling of the estimation method a set amount of times to increase the accuracy of the results. It then confirms that n(k)2=k to ensure the calculation was correct. It repeats this for all numbers from 1 to the requested maximum.

Threading
Our aim was to make a perfectly threaded benchmark, such that it would consistently use 100% of the CPU while in use. This is achieved by using CPUz to detect the CPU count and use exactly that many processing threads to avoid any performance losses due to multiple threads running on any single physical thread. Each thread is designed to do 1/n of the work, where n is the number of threads. For example, if you're calculating 16 roots on 4 CPU's, each CPU will calculate 4 roots. Some might argue that this style of threading is unrealistic in real-time performance, but in fact is quite indicative of performance in several real world tasks such as F@H which allows you to run several instances of the work at any one time.

Hardware Information
wPrime retrieves most hardware information thanks to CPUz. It retrieves CPU information such as clock speed, code name, cache size, voltage, etc. It retrieves the motherboard model and the amount, speed and timings of your memory.

When scores are submitted to the hwbot with CPUz installed, it will send this extra hardware information to our server to provide more detailed hardware specs to the scores when viewed on hwbot.

So what's 'Prime' got to do with square roots? Well nothing, initially I had planned a Prime number calculator but no logical pattern for each prime number is known so it's difficult to confirm accuracy of the results. Square roots however, have a logical and simple reverse (the square)."
