PC Update Really Has Taken On a Different Look and Feel. I am pleased to advise members of Melbourne PC User Group that the contract for the production of our magazine has been awarded to Gary Taig. The subcommittee for the evaluation of tenders of which I was not a part, saw fit to grant this job to Gary on the basis of several factors. Overall cost to the group: knowledge and understanding of PC Update: extensive local knowledge of Melb PC and his ability to provide constructive and positive input to the group's image and growth. I believe Gary demonstrated his dedication when he jumped in and produced several interim issues without any remuneration for his time and effort. Thanks For a Job Well Done I extend sincere thanks to Carol Daniels on behalf of all members for the sterling job she did in editing a first class magazine for several years. Her work was of an exceptionally high standard and did us all proud. Carol also gave several years of very meaningful input into the Melb PC committee as well as to APCUG. In both her editorial work and her committee work she has been very insightful and dedicated to getting things done. Urgent Call! Before 29 February 2000 The Summer Challenge at the Red Cross Blood Bank is almost over for this year and we are giving a creditable showing of our numbers for a first-time entry into the challenge. The Blood Bank is always in need of donors and we can show our community spirit by helping out if we are eligible to so do. If you are under 70, have no major diseases like malaria or hepatitis, and are not using illicit drugs, the Blood Bank would really appreciate your donation. There is still time to go to a mobile centre or to the main collection centres in South Melbourne or the city. Ring 131 495 to locate the nearest point and arrange your appointment. Orientation Days I am pleased to announce we are again starting the Orientation Days for new and established members to come and see our facilities and find out more about the many benefits of Melb PC membership. Past president Stan Johnstone will run these as previously with the first one planned for Saturday, 4 March 2000. These sessions are held at the Melb PC office at 27 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne, starting at 10.00 am and running for about two hours. These sessions also provide valuable feedback to Melb PC so we are able to collect your ideas and let you know where we are going. You are welcome to bring family or friends. You never know - we might even talk them into joining Melb PC or become involved in one of the many Group activities. However, please make a booking with the office on (03) 9699 6222 for this free session as unexpected large numbers attending can be a problem. Friday Night Seminars Following the success of similar seminars held over the last two years,
Melbourne PC Training is holding a series of seminars on Friday nights. These three hour sessions are
inexpensive at just $20 per session and you will come away with lots of info.
The Internet With 30 additional dial up lines operating at http://www.melbpc.org.au/ our access has never been better. Thanks go to the Internet admin. team and especially to George Skarbek who has negotiated better service for us with our major feeds. The whole system seems to really fly. Well done. Free Classes Stan Johnstone will soon be running more of those very popular Free Daytime Internet Classes. Look for an announcement and details later in this issue. Monthly Meetings We have a good lineup of speakers over the next few months come and look, listen and learn about the industry. At the March meeting, you can have a look at Linux. This operating system is really grabbing a strong footing in the industry, and has Microsoft looking with interest. Here is a stable, solid operating system with a graphical user interface and very functional suite of application software for very little money. Come and see it! See you on Wednesday 1st March at the Pharmacy College. |
