QBchess! And The Andernach Chess Rule
Keith Phillips

QBchess!.bas is a program that displays a chess board designed for solving chess puzzles. This was featured inn the May 2001 magazine article "Two QBASIC Programs, Now With More Features" and can be downloaded from the link to QB&more!.zip. Also, read the paragraph "How to Run These Qbasic Programs" in the above article. Unzip the download into the C:\QB directory.

If you don't have a shortcut named "RUN Qbasic" in C:\QB see "Compare Any Two Files Displayed In Windows Explorer" in PC Update August 2001. Read the paragraph "Make A Shortcut To Run Qbasic.exe". Double click the "RUN Qbasic" shortcut in C:\QB and then Open and Run the QBchess!.bas program.

The Andernach Rule is "change the colour of any piece (except a King) when it makes a capture". An example puzzle is in The Weekend Australian, December, 8-9, 2001. The second last move in solving the puzzle produces the board in the "Black To Move" image. The last move is Black Bishop a3 takes White Bishop c1. Apply the Andernach Rule: change the Black Bishop on c1 into a White Bishop. The net result of Black's move is to lose a Black Bishop and make no change in White's pieces!

The puzzle doesn't end with checkmate as in conventional chess puzzles. It ends with the pieces arranged in a pattern impossible to create in conventional chess puzzles.

Instructions for saving the solution in a data file and replaying it can be downloaded from the following link -  Andernach.zip. Unzip the download into the C:\QB directory and read the file named A1readme.txt.
