The second edition of Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats, published in 1996, is out of print. It will be sadly missed as the most comprehensive listing and description of graphics file formats in print.
There are still some stocks about, so anyone who wants an encyclopaedic reference that describes in full technical detail all the known formats from day zero to 1996 should make sure of a copy now. An essential reference for libraries and graphics professionals. A Web site contains a number of formats that have been created since publication; these are somewhat esoteric (like a format for fingerprints). Developers have concentrated on compression techniques rather than new formats.
