As well as the above portfolios, John Swale has Rules & Procedures with assistance from Bill Ford;
Dave Botherway has Building & Venues and I have Internet and the BBS.
The primary aim of the entire committee is to look after the interests of all of our members. In my
opinion, this has been achieved very well by the last committee and we hope to keep improving benefits
to members in the coming year.
Planning Session
The existing committee plus all candidates attended a full day planning session on Saturday 19 October.
The object of the planning session was to determine where we should be heading in the medium term and
where the group should be by the year 2007.
We all agreed that it was a very productive day and much was achieved. The use of Zing technology
assisted considerably in arriving at the decisions. If anyone is interested in this technology see
http://www.intouch.com.au/schools/zing.htm
for more details.
Our objectives, the members who are allocated to achieving them and the timelines will be summarised
and published on the Web.
The main points were that by 2007:
- We should be in our own premises, probably sub-letting to other associated groups
- We should attract new and younger members by providing a wider range of services
- We should be supporting interstate users
- Our ISP service must have broadband
These and other plans will be implemented by this and subsequent committees as naturally a great deal
of work needs to be performed to implement any one of the above goals.
Monthly Meetings Location
In my last column I wrote that the Parkville venue will not be available for 2003. In the last week this
has changed and some meetings can be held there, but there is no long-term guarantee. If any member is
aware of any suitable hall that can accommodate 250 or more with adequate parking close to the city,
would you please contact the committee,
committee@melbpc.org.au.
Traditionally there is no January meeting as many members are away for the holidays. The February and
March meetings will be held at the Besen Centre at Mount Scopus College, 87-89 Station St Burwood
adjacent to Deakin Burwood University. This venue has excellent facilities. See
http://www.besencentre.com.au for full details. Unfortunately
we cannot have it for many of our meetings in the second part of the year and we are investigating two other venues in the SE suburbs. As the number of members attending at Clayton was over 500, we need a hall to accommodate 600 or more members. If anyone knows of a suitable hall please contact the committee.
Next Monthly Meeting
This will be Wednesday 4 December at the Pharmacy College in Parkville starting at 6 pm.
Charles Wright On The Years Ahead
In the world of computers, Charles Wright is the guru of talkback radio and a writer in The Age and
other publications. Come and hear him in person talking on: "Computing and Computers: The Years Ahead".
Whatever Happened To 1-2-3?
Many of us cut our teeth on Lotus 1-2-3 before being lured away by Big X. So what's happening now?
Duncan Hewitt, Australian manager for Lotus at IBM will come and show us exactly where they are.
Since this will be the last meeting before Christmas, Anne Fraser will come along with a case
full of Dorling Kindersly software. These are the very last of the magnificent educational CDs
available in Australia. The company has gone, alas, but Anne will be selling her remaining stock for
ridiculous prices, perfect Christmas gifts.
Members have been entering the Digital Photo Competition all year. Come and see the quality of
their work and see the draw for the Grand Prize - the Coolpix 5000 Digital Camera. There is also the
draw for the Javascript Bible competition.
