This is a collection of 500 hints, tips, and tricks for OS X users and is based on content from the author's Web site, http://www.macosxhints.com - but "every hint has been rewritten, expanded, organised, indexed, tested for compatibility with Mac OS X 10.2, and in many cases illustrated". Each hint is a stand-alone item with all the information necessary to use it; the style is not terse, but there are no hand-holding explanations. The writing is of an excellent standard and information is well organised with a good index and a comprehensive table of contents. The hints are grouped by topic and fully listed in the TOC. The first group, Designing Your World, covers startup and shutdown, display and sounds, menulets, and setting up (to save memory, share printers, and get help). Other groups include The Finder and Desktop (which covers navigation, aliases, and working with files and folders); Programs (managing programs, printing, the classic interface, and troubleshooting); System Preferences; Networking; Mail; Web Browsers; Add-Ons; and an extensive collection of Unix hints. An invaluable compilation of information that could not be found easily-if at all-in other resources. It is published by Pogue Press/O'Reilly and is of the same high quality as the Pogue Missing Manual series. It is of particular value to users who want to master the OS X terminal (a UNIX shell).
