Returning Officer’s Report
Doug Brooke

8 November, 2003
Secretary
Melbourne PC User Group Inc.
P O Box 283 SOUTH MELBOURNE

Dear Mr Swale

I am setting out hereunder my report of the election of committee members held at the Annual General Meeting of Melbourne PC User Group Incorporated on Wednesday 5 November 2003 at University of Melbourne - Private, Hawthorn Campus, 442 Auburn Road Hawthorn.

Annual Election Results

The breakup of votes cast for the election of committee members was as follows:

  Meeting
Proxy
Postal
Invalid
Total votes

115
323
46
5
489

There were 10 candidates for the eight vacant committee member positions and the results of the election are:

Successful candidates:

  George Skarbek
Barry Martin
Frank Maher
Diana Allen
William Dair
John Hall
Ray Beatty
Lyn Goodall

476
 469
 466
 465
 461
448
414
378

Unsuccessful candidates:

  Maurice Canterbury
Morris Tobias

 158
 138

Considering the size of the Melbourne PC User Group membership it is rather disappointing that there were only 489 total votes cast, including a small number of invalid votes.

I believe the Group is able to do much better and encourage a greater proportion of our membership to vote than about 4.9% of members who voted this year. As I indicated in my report last year I am strongly of the view that to ensure continuing good governance of Melb PC, future elections for committee should be
conducted by postal ballot and I strongly recommend that this method should be introduced for the 2004 elections.
