George Skarbek tells about more modems and much wider access for members
using the Internet Service |
The Greater Melbourne phone number is now available to all Full Internet
Subscribers. To those living in the Greater Melbourne and Metropolitan area it
is another dial-up number that provides you with access to more modems at local
phone call rates.
To use it, add another dial-up icon with the phone number, 0198 333 365. For
information on how to do this see the FAQ, Creating a Dial Up Network for
Melb PC at:
http://www.melbpc.org.au/faq/dialicon.htm.
In addition to being a local call from the Melbourne area, this number is a
local call from many phone districts surrounding Melbourne (that's why it is
called the Greater Melbourne phone number). A list of all phone exchanges
that should provide this wider access can be viewed at
http://www.melbpc.org.au/report/prefixes.txt.
This phone number does not use the Melb PC modems or network. You may find it
better with your modem, so give it a try. In addition, there is a high
probability of getting bonus time. Time online using the Greater Melbourne
number is counted in your total time, but is only displayed by the pop-up timer
after logging in at Radsec,
https://radsec.melbpc.org.au/member/ and selecting the Timer Information
menu item.
When using 0198 333 365, please check that you do not set a proxy server in your
browser. Note: this is the recommended setting for all Melb PC dial-ups. See the
FAQ,
http://www.melbpc.org.au/faq/proxyset.htm for information on how to do this.
Apart from the phone number itself, other settings for the Greater Melbourne
phone number are the same as all other Melb PC dial-up lines.
Please raise any further questions on the Greater Melbourne phone number in
newsgroup melbpc.connectivity.
