Update Notes
Gary Taig

Some time back I engaged the services of a couple of freelance sales reps, so that we could get the PC Update advertising income up to the point where it would support expanding the circulation. They seem to be having trouble getting good prospects so I plan to help them for a short time. After that I'll be calling out to the membership at large for someone who can sell advertising. If you're in that category, please call me anyway. I want to talk to you.

I need the help of members from all over Melbourne. That's probably you! Would you help, please?
The PC Update advertising prospects that any sales person needs to approach are sellers of computers and their components and/or any associated services. There are hundreds of companies spread all over town, many of them hiding around corners and generally known only to their local shoppers. Imagine what some exposure in PC Update could do for them!

Behind your address flysheet this month there is a blank form where you could fill out some details. The information I need is the name of the shop, the address, preferably the phone number and if possible, the name of the manager. I'm particularly interested in businesses where you have shopped and you know they provide good products/services. I'm not interested in shonky dealers - if there are any of those in Melbourne - because I wouldn't want to expose them to the members anyway.

Please don't attempt to sell this company on the idea of advertising in PC Update - we have trained sales people whose job it is to make contact and tell them about the benefits of advertising in PC Update - making their products and services known to our 11,000 members. You will be helping PC Update tremendously by gathering the information and sending it in here. Any more than that could kill the opportunity before it has a chance to blossom.

I'd greatly appreciate if you would complete the form, one company is enough but if you deal with two or more, that will be wonderful. Please fax the sheet to me on (03)9700 7700 or mail it to the address on the form. Make sure you add your name and membership number because I'll put you into a draw for a nice prize. I'll think of something really nice... something special.

Some Good Value Material

Each month as I gather material and assemble PC Update I'm constantly reminded of the terrific value it is, especially to new computer users. The SIG reports alone contain a myriad of tips 'n tricks and if you read them carefully you can pick lots of little ideas, warnings and general knowledge.

However, every now and then a gem comes along and this month I have some beauties for you. In the box below are a number of URLs that point to articles in the I/O Port Newsletter, the online magazine of the Tulsa Computer Society.

Have a look, especially if you are new to computers or new to the Internet. Print them out, read them at leisure and keep them for reference.

The president of that group is Don Singleton and over recent months Don has picked out some of the scams that abound and thoroughly documented them. It's almost mandatory reading for anyone about to embark upon their Internet experience. Experienced members will be tempted to print them out, like I did, just to have them handy to show a new member one day. Read them anyway - I'd lay odds you'll learn something new.
