Maria Simmons writes “Leave your temper at the door as this game is very
frustrating and extremely addictive”. |
If you have ever played Bejewelled (aka Diamond Mine), then you will love
Jewel
Quest. It is Bejewelled, with added twists to make it much more challenging.
Explore ancient ruins of the Mayan civilization while discovering hidden
treasures and priceless artefacts. In this unique new take on the classic
matching game, you must rearrange valuable relics to turn sand tiles into gold.
When all of the tiles in a puzzle board are golden, you win.
As you venture deeper into the jungle, you will encounter increasingly difficult
puzzles containing secret twists, cursed items, and buried artefacts. A fresh
take on classic game play that will leave you wanting more. Go questing today.
See Figure 1.
Game Play
Jewel Quest can be played in a window or full screen. Your choice can be
selected from the options menu. See Figure 2.
Form matches by lining up three or more identical relics horizontally or
vertically. Swap two adjacent relics by clicking on both squares or by dragging
one relic to the adjacent square. Matched relics are removed and new relics will
fall from above, filling the empty spaces. Often, this will cause chain
reactions and those too will be scored and removed. As relics are matched, the
board spaces under them turn to gold. Turn all spaces to gold to complete the
board.
The game begins with five lives. Bonus lives are awarded every 50,000 points.
Lives can be lost either by running out of time or in other ways. The game ends
when all lives are gone. Complete the level before the timer runs out or else a
life will be lost. If the level is completed in time, bonus points are added
based on how much time is left. The more relics that are matched simultaneously,
the more points scored per relic. Chain reactions will score even higher. Also,
each space turned to gold is worth an additional 50 points.
Hints are automatically given if no play has been made after a period of time.
Watch for two relics that quickly animate to see an available move.
There are many new things to discover along your journey, but you must discover
them for yourself. Be resourceful, dig deep, and your reward will be great. See
Figure 3.
The thing I liked best about this game is that there are many levels:
- Explorer
- Adventurer
- Excavator
- Surveyor
- Researcher
Each level has between 5 and 10 sublevels. Each sublevel is harder than the
last. As you get into the higher sublevels, you will find that you sometimes
have to match certain relics more than once before the square turns to gold. The
good thing is that you can quit the game at any time and pick up where you left
off (you lose your points though). See Figure 4.
