Photoshop CS2 for Dummies
- for the bookshelf

Photoshop CS 2 All-in-One Desk Reference for Dummies is a recent addition
to the all-in-one series. The intention is to present a comprehensive reference
to users who have "a good grasp of using a computer and navigating the operating
system and at least a cursory knowledge [of the particular subject]", which in
this instance is Photoshop CS2. Unlike other titles in the series, this one is
printed in full colour on glossy paper — a book on Photoshop without colour is
difficult to imagine.
The cover describes it as 'nine books in one', which means it has stand-alone
parts with a common index. The division is a good concept and works well,
enabling novice users to work progressively through the various aspects of
Photoshop. It also enable more experienced users to go directly to topics on
which they want specific instruction. Additional chapters are available as PDF files from the book's companion Web site.
The style is tutorial with plenty of explanatory comment, useful tips, and
discussions of important issues such as colour theory, colour modes, file
formats, and setting up a work environment.
Both Mac and Windows users are catered for; Photoshop presents pretty much the
same on both operating systems, but there are occasional differences that are
fully noted in the book.
This is a reference-cum-tutorial that focuses on the practical application of
Photoshop. The depth of detail is very good without overwhelming the reader; the
effective management of
colour requires a reasonable understanding of the science — the author gets that
balance just right.
