Getting the Word Out

There are still too many people out there who haven't heard about Melbourne PC User Group and the benefits there are in being a member. I have started a series of presentations to groups such as Rotary Clubs and Women's groups, the first of these being mid December. I intend to contact other groups that may need guest speakers, with the aim of spreading the word about who we are and what we do.

The Women's group requested an interesting topic "Caught in the Net" and they were looking for safety tips on:

  • what women can do to be safe on the net

  • making financial transactions

  • using chat rooms and dating sites

  • and how to erase search history and protect privacy
I was also asked to attend a meeting in December, hosted by Thornbury Women's Neighbourhood House. They are in the early
stages of discussing ideas around Online Learning for older people and they invited a range of potential partners to come together to discuss the topic eg U3A, City of Darebin, Veronic Gardens (a local aged care facility) as well as local interested people.

If you can think of other ways to get the word out or know any groups that are looking for guest speakers please let me know on president@melbpc.org.au.

Screening for Cancer & Other Health Issues

This issue has been discussed in depth in the Newsgroups after the untimely death of Belinda Emmett aged 32. Whatever you think about the subject, as a member of Melb PC you have an opportunity to join in the discussions or just read them. Either way its good to know that we have forums for discussion about important items that affect our way of life.

Volunteers

Volunteers are the lifeblood of Melb PC. Recently we had the opportunity to promote ourselves at Chadstone Shopping Centre, with very short notice. Volunteers took the challenge and we gained 10 new members on the spot! We gave out over 200 magazines, training information and
application forms. We have had quite a few enrolments and people calling back with enquiries.

We also had the opportunity to exhibit on a VIP Night held on 22nd December. If you would like to volunteer for anything within Melb PC please contact the office@melbpc.org.au or (03)9567 8000 to register your name.

As you read this column the countdown to Christmas will have truly begun. Whatever you are doing, we trust that you will have a good break and a safe and happy start to the new year.
