The magazine of the Melbourne PC User Group

The President's Pen
Spen Ingamells

A very warm Welcome to all those many hundreds of New Members who joined Melbourne PC User Group during the past two months.

PC 91 was just terrific. Many of you came and saw us for the first time at the Exhibition Buildings. You went home clutching a small receipt indicating you were now a paid up Member of this unique club.

Every day since PC 91, we have received by mail more application forms taken home from the show. Others who were introduced by a friend, are joining us at a rapid rate. Melbourne PC User Group is very definitely on the move.

The numbers grow, our human resources flourish. The benefits to each and every member will continue to multiply. We are moving quickly along the path to being an enormously successful and active Group. I am delighted to be able to play a small part in this dynamic organization.

Support is also growing

We now have more Software Vendors wanting to become involved as they can see the immense benefits of providing support to such a dedicated group of enthusiasts. Is that a sign of things to come? Could it eventuate that one day we have Software Vendors making their product release announcements at our Monthly Meetings? Who knows what may happen at the next meeting?

In addition, we have another record number of advertisers in PC Update this month, each directing some of their valued advertising budget to just the right spot. We hope you continue to support them because it's the extra business they do with you, the readers, that encourages them to extend this support.

More and more companies are anxious to talk at our Monthly Meetings. The presentations we have in store for you are fantastic. Watch out in future months for some of the most informative and entertaining demonstrations we have ever seen.

Buying Service

The Members' buying service has surpassed all expectations. Turnover exceeded $30,000 in the first month and that success brings many more benefits with it. Not only can we expand the range of products, but in time we shall be able to buy at lower prices, passing these savings on to you. Keep up the support. Look at list and find yourself a real bargain!

Training

Ken Blair and Tom Coleman have been spending many hours fine tuning the training program and they have already begun planning courses for next year. If you would like to see training courses run on any particular topic, be sure to read the training section and talk with Tom or Ken. Let them know your requirements.

The Office move is all over

0ur St. Kilda Road office is beginning to appear as it should, orderly and managed. For a while I wondered if we would ever cope with getting back to normal. The postman's shoulders drooped as he walked in each morning, under the weight of the increasing load of membership mail. Our Office Manager just stared in amazement as the great sack of mail was added to the backlog.

We have more office area now, the conference and meeting room is about the same size as in the old building and most suitably located right next to the office.

Activists

Response to the call for Activists has been tremendous. Gary Taig tells me he is concerned about seating for the inaugural meeting next Tuesday. By the time you read this we should have many new groups of people, all planning the presentation of their ideas to the Committee. This Issue of PC Update goes to print before that first meeting but I'm sure Gary will have an interesting account of the night for us, next month. I suggest, that if you are concerned with missing out on some of this grass roots activity, call Gary now anyway. We might still have an opening and may need your special skills in a particular area. Join now and watch from the inside, as Melbourne PC User Group lifts its sights and expands its activities.

PC Update

I'm thrilled to be associated with the two hard working, resourceful and innovative people whose efforts play a major role in bringing us this outstanding magazine each month - our Editor, Peter Smith and Advertising Manager, Laurence Blake. You have seen the size of PC Update grow over rent months and from all I see, that growth will be sustained. Peter, Laurence, and helpers, we all thank you, sincerely.

This Month's Meeting

There is much to see at on Wednesday night We have an interesting line-up with Central Point Software demonstrating PC Tools 7, Central Point Backup and Central Point Anti-Virus. As well as that Data Image will show us MoreFonts and Super Store.

I eagerly look forward to seeing you and hope nothing prevents you from joining me for this educational and entertaining evening with our group.
