Thank You, Peter!

As you might have gathered by now, the committee managed to resolve its differences and we shall go for an early election. I have mixed feelings about accepting the job of Editor because of the excellent job done by Peter Smith since he took over from me in November 1990. He will help me with the production of this fine, award-winning journal until the election in August. All other associate editors will continue their tasks as per usual. Please join me in thanking Peter for all that he has done for us to date.

Good News Department

Recently, Dennis Hayes, the founder of Hayes Corporation asked to see me with one of my APCUG hats. Hayes (the company) is well-known for its fine modems and more so for its standard "AT" command set used (to interact with communications software) by nearly all modem makers.

My lesser-known APCUG role is that of SYSOP, Globalnet BBS (Australian node). Unfortunately, the Dell PC and its 64-line TBBS software are stuck in the US awaiting some cheap (read "tax-free") means of transfer to Australia. More on that some other time. The relevance of that BBS is that it helps interested committee members communicate with their peers in other groups around the world.

At Comdex Fall Hayes Corporation donated two Austel-approved V-Series ULTRA Smartmodem 9600 modems for the APCUG Oz BBS, and promised two more. As Dennis was in town as the keynote speaker at the ATUG Conference, it was a good opportunity to see him again. The two modems will be forthcoming.

Now the really good news. I took along Peter Smith with me and he suggested that Melb PC's new 16-line BBS would be a good candidate for some joint publicity along with the launch of Hayes Corporation in Australia around August. We shall be publishing a detailed review of this V.32/V.42/V.42bis modem soon.

When Peter said that some of the modems for our Melb PC BBS had been purchased, Dennis said we should return them because he would like to donate "some" ULTRA 9600s and trade "some more" at sysop rates for advertising space in PC Update. The next day, Charles Wright (in his Green Guide guise) saw Dennis and obtained some more goodies for Melb PC. Our members will somehow get access to the Hayes BBS in Asia, and we will be given some literature in paper and electronic form.

When this happens, it will represent the most tangible benefit derived from our membership in APCUG. Thanks again, Dennis Hayes, Charles, and Peter.

PC Update BBS

The TBBS software is being beta-tested on the PC Update BBS and unfortunately you will need to reregister. Colin Macauley, our SYSOP, hopes to have it as part of the 16-line "main" BBS but it will continue to have separate phone lines. He also hopes to provide a new file area for PC Update listings and executables so that you can get more value from this magazine.

Authors, Please Note

The article "famine" is temporarily over. Could authors of non-topical articles please take a break for one, repeat, one month? There is a little backlog that is causing anguish for some authors. Occasionally we are guilty of misplacing an article when some urgent, group-related material needs to get in its stead. If you submitted such an item more than three months ago please write to me at the group's office. Sometimes we hold an item to use as part of a "theme". Thanks for supporting PC Update - our own magazine!
