As you would have read in the June newsletter, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is to be held on Wednesday 5th August 1992 at Clunies-Ross House. The Interim Committee has deferred the Special Resolutions that were to be voted on in July to the August meeting since the Interim Committee would not act on the resolutions, and less disruption will be caused to the July auction. The August edition of PC Update will be mailed with the President's Report, Treasurer's Report, an Income and Expenditure statement, and an Appointment of Proxy form. We would encourage you to read these documents carefully prior to the AGM, and if necessary mail your Proxy form to the Secretary. We intend to introduce new arrangements for voter registration at the AGM. All members are asked to bring their membership cards. There will be a number of tables at which you can present your membership card or PC Update magazine mailing label in order to be registered to vote and receive your voting papers. Those who fail to bring their membership card or a PC Update magazine mailing label will have to queue twice: firstly in a queue where proof of identity will be needed in order to be given your membership number, and then in the other queue to register to vole. If at all possible please try to be early, say 5.30 PM so as to allow sufficient time for voter registration. Random access will begin at 6.00 PM as usual, and IBM's presentation on OS/2 will then follow. The AGM will be held after that. Thus latecomers will miss out on the really worthwhile part of the meeting! Interim Committee Member Resigns Charles Wright has resigned from the Interim Committee. He believes the three independent executive members of the committee are quite capable of steering the group through to the AGM and his presence on the Interim Committee is not necessary. George Skarbek, Giuseppe De Simone and myself are quite humbled by this vote of confidence and would like to thank Charles for his efforts on behalf of Melb PC in the past, and wish him well as he returns to a more normal family life. New Record Set I'm told that the two meeting of the Interim Committee held on the 11th May and 1st June have set a new Melb PC record. Both meetings went for more than six hours! On the whole this has been because the independent executive committee members have had to get up-to-speed on the existing structure and procedures of Melb PC. We are grateful for the support given by past committee members, active members of Melb PC, and interested members at these meetings. Interim Committee Actions Because of the dispute as to the validity of all committee meetings held since the December 1991 AGM, most of the actions taken by the Interim Committee have been, where necessary, to ratify decisions made at those disputed meetings. Where we have felt it prudent we have also moved motions to tighten up the controls on, and reporting of, existing Melb PC activities. The Interim Committee has also appointed a legal officer for the group who will be instructed to answer certain questions put to him by the executive members of committee. An insurance broker has been asked to check on the status of our insurance cover and make recommendations as to the adequacy of our cover, especially in relation to contract trainers and transit insurance. A solicitor has been appointed to send out warning notices to delinquent debtors. We currently are owed over $10,000 which has been outstanding for more than three months. Finally, we have appointed on a temporary basis a Certified Practising Accountant to perform a full reconciliation of the financial records of Melb PC, and to make recommendations on the accounting and general office procedures which should be put in place. The Interim Committee has been asked to make changes to some group services and activities which we felt inappropriate to do given that we are only an Interim Committee, and as much as possible seek to maintain the status quo. Even where all of us have agreed on the proposed changes, we have felt it appropriate to leave such decisions to the committee elected at the August AGM. As much as possible, Melb PC activities and services will continue as is until the incoming committee lakes over. PC92 Show Tom Coleman is coordinating our efforts for the PC92 Show. This is our biggest opportunity to recruit new members each year. If you're able to offer help in organising for the show, setting up the stand, or as a volunteer manning the stand, please contact Tom. We would encourage all members to attend the show, and maybe even help out for a few hours on the Melb PC stand. You'll be surprised what you'll learn about
Melb PC and the interests of other computer users, and how that will enrich your own experiences. At the very least make the time to get to the Melb PC stand and meet some fellow members. |
